National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC)

NSPCC is a free helpline for children and young people in the UK. Young people with a problem can call 0800 1111 day or night to talk anonymously with a counselor trained to.

If you'd like more information about NSPCC, please visit http://www.nspcc.org.uk, where you can find out just how valuable this organization is. Since it opened in 1986, NSPCC has 1,400 volunteers in 11 centers, supervised by professional supervisors and managers who answer about 2,500 calls a day. To date, NSPCC has helped over a million children.

But 4,500 children call every day. Lack of funds means 2,000 children a day cannot get through to NSPCC to find comfort, advice and protection. That's more than 700,000 children a year without the help they need.

Children's Hospital in Oxford

If you've ever visited a sick child in the hospital, you know they often feel vulnerable and scared. They miss their families, they miss their friends and they miss their homes. Sometimes they're too young to understand what's going on. Other times, they are old enough to understand, but nobody takes the time to talk to them about it.

Every child is different, every age is different. But, the average hospital doesn't take children's physical and emotional needs into account because it's designed and run with adult needs in mind.

Let's face it. All children should be in as normal an environment as possible, especially when they're sick. But they can't do that in a hospital meant for adults, where they're shushed, and told not to disturb, and to go to their rooms and take a nap.

That's why Oxford is building a children's hospital.

The Oxford Children's Hospital will have 106 beds, some of which will be beds for parents to "sleep over" so their young child doesn't feel so afraid and alone.

Improved classrooms give structure and offer better opportunity for learning. Bigger play spaces and sensory rooms let them play and laugh. And all that means they'll have the positive environment evidence shows they need to heal faster.

But to finish building that hospital, Oxford needs cash both for construction and for operations. They're still 2.5 million GBP short of what they need to finish the hospital.
